2008 IPHC Annual Meeting
  • Area 2A (Oregon, Washington and California)
  • 2008 catch limit = 1,220,000 pounds
  • (2007 = 1,340,000 pounds)


    • The IPHC adopted a new stock assessment methodology and reduced the coastwide catch by 7 percent from the 2007 total.
    • Staff of the IPHC recommended a new approach to allocate catch between management areas which would have shifted catch from the eastern to the western part of the range (not adopted but under review).
    • The IPHC adopted a 9 percent decrease in 2A catch limit for 2008.

Survey Based Catch Allocation
  • Total biomass = density × bottom area
  • Biomass index = survey CPUE × bottom area
  • Area allocation = area index / sum of indices


  • Survey CPUE: 3-year running average.
  • Bottom area: 0-300 fm.

  • It is unlawful to fish for or take and retain any legal species while possessing on board any species not allowed to be taken in that area at the time (i.e., transiting Stonewall Bank YRCA with halibut on vessel is legal as long as no lines are in the water)
